Conic section:

A conic section is the locus of a point which moves in a plane in such that its distance from a fixed point is in a constant ratio to its perpendicular distance from a fixed straight line. The fixed point is called the focus and the fixed straight line is called directrix.

The straight line through the focus and perpendicular to the directrix is called the axis conic section.

The constant ratio is called the eccentricity and is denoted by e.

Note: If e = 1, the conic is called parabola, if e < 1, the conic is called an ellipse and if e > 1, the conic is called hyperbola.
